Gorongosa National Park

Did you know?
Gorongosa is recognised as one of the most biodiverse places on the planet.

Spanning over 4,000 sq.km (1 million acres), this park is a jewel of Africa’s wilderness, with diverse landscapes ranging from floodplains and savannas to dense forests and the towering Mount Gorongosa. It is home to over 500 bird species, iconic mammals like lions, wild dogs, elephants, large herds of antelope, and numerous reptiles and insects.

At the heart of Gorongosa’s success is its focus on people. The Gorongosa Restoration Project includes healthcare programs, educational opportunities for women and girls, and sustainable agriculture initiatives that benefit local farmers, ensuring that conservation and community development go hand in hand. By linking local well-being to the park’s success, surrounding communities become vital allies in conservation.

Gorongosa is also a leader in wildlife research, with ongoing projects to restore ecosystems and preserve biodiversity. The E.O. Wilson Laboratory at the park headquarters serves as a key hub for scientific research and education in Mozambique.

With its rich biodiversity, community engagement, and scientific efforts, Gorongosa is a haven for travelers seeking a deeper connection to Africa’s wild places.
